Yeah, those carbon ribbons kind of scare me. For me Selectric I, its nice because I can see when it gets to the end (there is no cartridge like the II and III). I actually bought three more of them online, which I anticipate will last me a long time, unless I NaNo with it (which I doubt).
I've got an extra cartridge for my Selectric II, in case it runs out. A new one of those are in any office supply store (luckily).
